SCHOLASTIC CHESS TOURNAMENTS
In keeping with the spirit of our status as a non-profit organization, the goal of our scholastic chess program is to cultivate the mentaldevelopment of our Jacksonville youth by encouraging theirparticipation in chess tournaments. Throughout the year, theJacksonville Chess Club (JCC) sponsors several events forscholastic players. The majority of participants have not yetchosen to join the national federation (U.S.C.F.), as most are newto organized tournament competition. The JCC facilitates thistransition by hosting a number of club-sponsored ‘Swiss”tourneys at various sites throughout the city. The “Swiss” tournament system ensures participation in apre-defined number of contests. (Unlike a “knockout” format, noone is eliminated, even if they lose a game!). A time control isused in which players must achieve a result (win, lose, or draw) orforfeit when their time expires. Tournament ads are located nearthe bottom of the NEWSLETTER link within our website.A typical format found in a tournament ad for these events wouldbe as follows: 3-RD Swiss,G/30, REG 1-2, RDS2:15,3:30,&5:00,Cost $5. These abbreviations indicate that afterpaying a $5 fee during registration from 1-2, participants will playthree games, beginning at 2:15, 3:30, and 5:00. Each game willlast, at most, one hour (30 minutes per side). The JCC charges amodest entry fee to defray the cost of prizes, services rendered, and to maintain the club’s treasury.Additionally, we maintain a CLUB RATING SYSTEM whichemphasizes participation as a primary concern.(More info onCLUB RATINGS can be found at the appropriate link within ourwebsite).
